Concert Summary

In direct contrast to the majority of young musicians pursuing American folk and blues during the early 1960's revivals, "Spider" John Koerner was a true innovator and original. Surprisingly, Koerner never intended on becoming a professional musician. As a teenager, he was far more interested in aviation, which in 1956 brought him to the University of Minnesota to pursue studies in aeronautical engineering. Two years later, at the age of 20, Koerner met fellow student, Harry Weber, who first introduced him to folk music. Weber played guitar himself and exposed Koerner to the likes of…entire summary

I have always been blown away by Spider John Koerner ever since I heard Running Jumping Standing Still which is still one of my top ten albums of all time.

This is a great recording of a legendary artist! He is still playing in this style-solo and stomping his foot! See him if you can. Spider Blues is a wonderful solo album that contains much of this material. Perhaps he is underappreciated because he has stuck to his guns and never strayed from tradition. First time I heard the White Stripes I felt they were drawing a lot of inspiration from him...the phrasing, the primal rhythm, and the swagger. Funny I have never heard this comparison before. Has Jack White ever admitted to the influence?

Spider John has toured, mostly little clubs all over America, for decades - just for the love of the music. Over the years, he's recorded here and there (mostly out-of-print now), and he's built a deep reputation arising out of a narrow niche of the music world - inspired Upper Midwestern folk singer-songwriters from the early 1960s, who got deeply into rural southern black and other "roots" music and interpreted it as faithfully as they could for college students and the American mainstream. A gift to us all.

Truely one of America's greatest "unknown" treasures. No one has ever sounded quite like him. The rare acoustic folk and blues musicians you can dance to.
