Concert Summary

Born in 1930 in New York City, American tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins began his musical career as a young teenager in the early 1940s. Initially influenced by the jump and rhythm and blues sounds of musicians like Louis Jordan, Rollins soon developed a more progressive individual style that utilized the strong sonority of Coleman Hawkins and the lighter flexible phrasing of Lester Young. Great show! Sonny could go as far out as anybody, but was always able to still keep it accessible!

One of my all-time favorite tenor players. Thanks for adding this show!

I saw him at whatever age he was at Montreal a few years ago. He carried a long concert on his sax (unlike Doctor John the same year, who let his horn player carry him through the show.) At the same time, the Montreal Cinematheque was showing vintage films as part of the Festival, which they seem to do now and then, including one of SR teaching seminars in New York and at the Sorbonne - unforgettable was him showing the kids how to hold a note indefinitely, breathing in his nose and out his mouth simultaneously and forever. I wish the Montreal film archive was online. Anyway, appreciate this set and hope for more.

Thanks for adding this to the vault. Would there be anymore Sonny Rollins that could be added to the vault? A true master of the art of jazz.

Sonny at SUNY New Paltz, it must have been a beautiful spring evening, just around graduation. A relaxed vibe!

great show. You can hear the 70's funk vibe that was going around. More jazz on the Vault!

Fabulous concert. If anyone wants to really bop and swing then get your chops around this. Amazing sax, guitar, bass and drums. Sonny Rollins is one of the top 5 tenor saxophonists of all time.
