Concert Summary

Fast on the heels of British Glam pioneers like David Bowie and T. Rex came these boot-stomping, pub-crashing maniacs: Slade, the Pride of Wolverhampton! While Messrs. Bowie and Bolan gave the impression of obsessively cultivating their respective glittery, space-age alter-egos, Slade took nothing seriously, creating ridiculously catchy, phonetically-titled shout-along anthems for football hooligans everywhere. Their image was every bit as outrageous as their…entire summary

I remember the fist time I heard SLADE, it was back in the early 70's. Noddy Holder's voice blew my mind and Jimmy Lee's Bass playing made him one of my favorites. Although I never got to see the band live, I played their records for years. Thanks to Wolfgang's concert vault,I go back in time and remember my youthful days with the music of SLADE. Thanks you for bringing back the past with these great live concerts. Tommy Rocker.

I saw Slade, Back Door & J Geils at Winterland in '73 (I think). It was my first time at Winterland. This May 6, 1973 show may not have been the time they played with Steely Dan & Humble Pie. Does anyone know for sure? I have lots of my old ticket stubs, but not this one. It wasn't serious Rock 'n Roll, just Pop 'n Roll. I remember spotlights reflecting off mirrors on someones shoes or hat, a human mirror ball!

My friends and I saw them in concert on a Friday night in the mid-1970s when they came to St. Louis. The next day they were at Peaches Records. We bought their album and had them signed by some of the members of the band. I remember they were very friendly to us fans. I have a couple of their albums and still play them now and then.

Slade have given me more pleasure than any other band I've ever heard. I was a fan at 8 years old and still love their music (particularly the 1971-1977 period) to this day. I have seen them live several times and can say that they were stunning on stage. It is well known in the UK that Slade didn't make it in America, despite being the best live band of the 1970s with the most under-rated vocalist in the history of rock music. What was it the Americans didn't get? Gene Simmons cites Slade's stage presence as a major influence but admits he couldn't understand a word that Noddy was singing. Mind you, Gene states in his autobiography that he thought Nod came from Wales! (sack the researcher, I think!)I just believe the whole boots on, stamp yer feet, working class good time scene was a little.....raucous and raw for certain tastes. I can't help feeling that Noddy was a bit nervous, tired and perhaps even bored when he speaks to the audience at this gig, not his usual ultra-confident and humorous self at all. Hear Me Calling is an average performance by all concerned and then Nod makes a complete arse of the lyrics to Move Over. His interaction with the crowd is a bit embarrassing too. Jim's bass on this song, the highlight of the magnificent Slayed? album the year before, sounds like a wet fart at Winterland. Not a great start and in a short set, not much time to put things right. Gudbuy T'Jane is much better and Just A Little Bit is great and the day is saved; Noddy is back to his best and the rest of the band follows suit. I'd love to know what Fagen and Becker made of this proletarian racket as they listened in the wings.

We were in line before this concert, at the side door of Winterland, when Slade arrived and walked right in front of us. It was startling to see how small that a lot of the UK musicians are - they were all wearing high-heeled boots, but we still had to look down at them. Their lead guitarist's 'Cleopatra' hairdo was unique, to say the least. That all said, Slade was a lot of fun to see play that night.
