Concert Summary

Slade had already conquered the UK and most of Europe when they moved from Polygram Records to Warner Brothers in the US in an attempt to take over the music scene stateside. It would never quite happen, but the band made a sizeable impact, especially around 1975 when they released a full-length motion picture (entitled Slade In Flame) and concentrated on an American tour, during which this show for the King Biscuit Flower Hour was recorded.

The group played a mix of older hits and new material, but none of the songs released after 1975 made much impact on US FM stations.…entire summary

All good stuff, "Slade" (as we all know) did a hell of a lot of good work State side with out receiving the recognition they deserved. Many thanks Wolfgang!

This was the show I was at! Last show on tour. They had to use up the confetti. Found that stuff in the crib for months after. LOUD PARTY!

I don't think it's a quiet a respectful audience, so much as an unheard audience. I suspect this is a soundboard recording with no microphone on the audience, note the intro where the audience have been normalised... "Are you waiting for Slade... BLAH, Blah, blah" until the music is about to begin "...from England, Warner Brothers recording artists, SLADE!" and they've suddenly gone. I have heard the London, New Victoria recording prior to Wolfgang adding it to the vault and it was just like this one. A barely audible audience. However, this is a great recording to dissect their music and analyse the construction of their live performance. The drums behind Hear Me Calling are great to hear, (as are the symbols later on the bass solo) I've never heard the drums bring in the other instruments so clearly. Don sounds right on point and it's a very tight attack. This change usually sounds distorted and rushed but here it's precise and perfectly executed. Get On Up sounds nig and bad and in your face whilst Gudbuy T'Jane is absolutely cracking (except for the furniture removals at 3:01, WTF!). On the other hand, How Does It Feel sounds awful, like some Wurlitzer carousel music. A shame to hear such an anthem reduced to drivel? I find it highly amusing that Dave Hill felt confident enough to solo for 5 mins after Just A Little Bit. He doesn't hit any real bum notes but he doesn't actually achieve anything either, does he? In comparison, the ending to Them Kinda Monkey's is excellent. This is obviously where the Jim Lea 'Night To Remember' or 'Something Else/Pistol Packin' Mama' bass & violin solo came from. You can actually hear it developing... "Keep It Rollin'....Yeah!" All in all, a great gig. Thanks Wolfie. ;-)

A tight, exciting and powerful show. Noddy is at his most confident and relaxed, even Dave's solo is bearable. The sound from the guitars is nicely distorted which adds to the experience. A pretty quiet but respectful audience, in marked contrast to the rabble at Winterland the previous year.

Pio
