Concert Summary

Simple Minds were at their peak as a commercially successful and critically acclaimed recording and performing act when this show was recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour on the band's Once Upon A Time tour. The basic line-up of the band was augmented by vocalist Robbie Clark, and ace percussionist Sue Hadjopolous (who had worked extensively with Joe Jackson).

The group had been around for eight years when they finally hit platinum pay dirt with the theme…entire summary

Pardon. You all know I meant Once Upon a Time, the CD which INCLUDED Alive and Kicking. Perhaps the much overplayed MTV Video is still stuck in my brain.

Yes, NGD was far less heralded and vastly superior to many that followed(but not all,in my opinion)As mentioned Sons and Fascination was really the mark of a change in their sound from the Pounding Synth fueled clutter(not in a bad way) of Reel to Reel Cacophony - Sons n Fasc.- NGD. Another change in substance was marked by SitR and still more change after the commercially successful Alive n Kicking, the follow-up and more commercially driven CD preceded Real Life which has a couple of tunes that I still play regularly and on and on. I wasn't crazy about the CD of covers but their Moscow Underground CD that I heard last year sounded good to my ears. I will purchase anything released by Jim and Charlie and hope to see them in the US before we all get too old..lol.. Long Live he White King.

After being turned on to SM in 84 and purchasing every CD of theirs I could get my hands on (Sparkle in the Rain absolutely blew my mind) I traveled on 4 occasions from Hawaii to Los Angeles to see them. One trip was literally 2 days for 2 shows @ Greek Theater and back on plane 3,000 miles home. Since then I went to every show that they played within 30 miles of me. I'm back in NYC and I can't remember seeing them since I had front row ,center seats @ The Beacon for their show in 01 with INXS(minus Hutchence sadly). My first SM show was ,for me, almost a religious experience as Jim pulled me,and everyone else,in,prancing and willing us to feel it. Mel Gaynors powerful drumming and OF COURSE Charlie Burchill's smooth, eerie guitar work(bringing to mind The Edge)flowed through my body. It's 2011 and the Simple Minds,to this day, have a regular place in my playlists. Minds Rule !!!

Excellant concert. Saw them (later?) on the tour in Hollywood, CA
at the Hollywood Paladium on Sunset.

I really went to see the opener, China Crisis, who put on a fine show(which is available on this site, too), but were physically constricted by having to set-up in front of the curtain (behind which was the Simple Minds stage set). CC didn't disappoint, but I think if they'd had the run of the stage, that they might've been more relaxed..... but it was still a fine show.

As much as I like the CC show, I was totally blown away with the Simple Minds show ! Excellant sound & lights and of course some great playing by the whole band. Impressive playing by all....... !

At the time I only had the ...New Gold Dream and (I think I'd just bought) the Sparkle In The Rain albums. As much as I liked the albums, they were really brought to life with the live show.

Fan for life; bought all the previous & subsequent albums, etc. etc.....

Wow.....brilliant they were really at their best in those days, i saw them in Rotterdam,Holland 1 april same year, after Sparkle in the rain they became a stadiumact and they really changed their style and music (too early in their carreer i think) Saw them perform in Amsterdam last year, great gig.

Great combination of guitar, synth, vocals, percussion. Too bad bassist Derek Forbes couldn't get along with the rest of the band- great loss. It's cool to hear Derek on backing vocals here. Usually JK does all the singing.

Went to see them them in Copenhagen 22/11-09. Maybe my 10th SM concert. And I agree. The tracks from New Gold Dream and Sons and Fascination still have the original quality. I do have all the albums, but it's mostly the old ones i fancy.
    Simple Minds forever .... thanx

I was at this show in the ghetto of irvington NJ. Still don't know how they ended up playing there --it was a gret show!
