Concert Summary

Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."

A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony…entire summary

I was in the Air Force stationed at Westover AFB Mass and attended this great concert. Santana AND Miles Davis on the same bill. What memories!!

Wow, what a truly flawless performance. It captures the present "woodstock," grit that the band had at the time, yet, it possesses the tight rhythm and virtuosity that the santana band would have in years to come. The Tanglewood Festival was truly a perfect snapshot, and a once in a lifetime performance of not only Santan but the overall music at the time. Influence and the new generation had met in August of 1970, Miles and Santana shared the same bill. But the other performers as well made the festival, in my opinion, the best festival out of any in that time period from 1967-72. The Who, Jethro Tull, Miles Davis, Preservation Hall, Chicago, and of course Santana just to name a few. As 2010 draws near, I hope that Wolfgang's Vault will strongly consider documenting the 40th anniversary of this artistic festival not just for the boomer gengeration but for the new (my) generation and new musicians everywhere. This festival was a showcase of true musicianship.

Clear sound, vital live performance...early Carlos (guitar work) was the most exciting. Almost makes me feel young again!

Thank God for Wolfgang's Vault! The only flies in the ointment are the irritating gaps added between songs. That's OK when a song has a natural ending but it really diminishes the experience to have a gap suddenly appear between--say--Black magic woman/Gypsy queen and Oye como va. I understand there are technical limitations but I have a suggestion: Send me the raw tracks (of e.g.Santana, Chicago, Jethro Tull, Yes, to start with) and I'll put gaps in places that don't interupt. That would really greatly improve an already marvellous service IMO.

I love Carlos, of course. Especially early Santana. But, man Michael Shrieve - wow. My first band we had a 16 year old drummer who was damn good. We played the video of Santana at Woodstock for him and he was ready to throw his drum sticks away. Michael looked like he was 16 too, but I think he 19 or 20. Man could he play...

I would pay double for this download. I still remember being a senior in high school in Miami and sneaking into the Santana concert at the UM baseball field around '69-70. Classic line-up, indeed!!
