Concert Summary

Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."

A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony…entire summary

Absolutely one of the very best sets here in the vault, IMHO. Maybe in the top 3 for me, including Springsteen at Winterland '78 (AMAZING 2:15 long set, and I'm not even that big a fan of Bruce) and the Stones in Brussels 10/73. Santana's such a great band, and the material from their first 3 albums is some of my favorite stuff, although I think the later Santana work gets judged a little harshly sometimes. We take it for granted now, but we forget how absolutely breakthrough it was to have a band who could seriously rock but also play Latin music and bring in elements of jazz and just general psychedelia, without regard to genre, just playing their own truth as all-out as possible. No wonder Miles loved them so much.

This really sounds like the group I saw at Altamont, the troubled followup to the Woodstock concert. It's great to have access to a full length show from that time.

I've loved this song since I was handed down the album from my sister at the age of 5 or 6.
