Concert Summary

Santana had gone through an experimental stage (that explored everything from jazz fusion to eclectic new age stylings) just prior to the recording of this show for the King Biscuit Flower Hour. Carlos Santana had done a number of solo projects but had decided to reconstruct the band to promote its Moonflower album, an odd mix of live tracks and studio cuts. As a fluke, Santana had a huge hit with its remake of the Zombies' 1964 hit, "She's Not There," and quite unexpectedly, Moonflower went platinum and pushed the…entire summary

It was no "fluke" that Santana played at Woodstock. Bill Graham, who was also managing the Grateful Dead at the time (a band Woodstock's promoters badly wanted to sign to give the event some credibility with other bands they were pursuing), insisted that, if they wanted the Dead, they had to also present this unknown band he was also managing, Santana. And we all remember how the Dead's set at Woodstock went down, right?

I'm surprised that a site called Wolfgang's Vault didn't know that--it's in Bill Graham's autobiography. Maybe you should make that book required reading before you anybody writes anything else.

The "Concert Summary" has one sentence that has just GOT to be corrected ... not just one or two, but *3* of the band members' names are mis-spelled! (And folks could easily infer an insult in two of those errors.) Fix 'em to: Chepito, Michael, Rolie.
    - I saw the correct spellings on the internet, so they must be true.
No, seriously, they're correct everywhere but here.

I'm slightly confused...the reviewer contends "the Woodstock-era version of the band was long gone even though three of its six members still remained when this show was recorded in 1978." And yet the personnel listing at the top of the page clearly indicates that Carlos Santana himself was the only surviving member of the original group at this show. Something is erroneous here. And don't get me wrong - I'm not impugning this later lineup. Tom Coster is a superb keyboardist and foil for Carlos, and you can't argue with all the top-notch percussionists. Really, this rates as one of the best Santana lineups ever. A peak performance, for sure.
