Concert Summary

By July of 1971, Santana was one of the most popular and commercially successful bands on the planet; and with Bill Graham managing and being such an instrumental part of their early success, they were the obvious choice to play the final set at the Fillmore West on closing night.

This set is notable for many reasons, perhaps the two most obvious being that it was the last to feature members from the classic "Woodstock-era" lineup and that it captures the group as they were splintering into two distinctive…entire summary

Man it was cool to be a teenager in the 70's, Free concerts in Golden Gate Park, go to Winterland(FYI: this was one of the last concerts held at Winterland) high on LSD or Mushrooms... and only a true Hippy or native of SF would know anything about what I'm talking about, no campain ribbon(book, film or movie) could ever tell the story of the Haight in the late 60's and early 70's. You had have been there................that's my story and I'm sticking to it..........

The Sanatana band never again had this amazing rhythmic genius is its sound: Michael Shrieve - drums (transcendent player with the heart of a jazz drummer) Jose Chepito Areas - percussion, conga, timbales (the first ROCK timbales player - brilliant, original musician) Mike Carabello - percussion, conga, tambourine, vocals (great player) Thomas "Coke" Escovedo - percussion (left to create the band Azteca with his brother Pete) David Brown - bass (he ended up in jail no long after this, really sidetracked his career)

What an awsome set. No fancy electronic trickery, just great roots rocking jams.

To 'Morlaco', I was infact refering to the legacy edition of the 'Santana III' album that has the fillmore west gig on the second cd. Both albums are excellent for their additional features upon the respective original albums.

If the rest of this show isn't found elsewhere, we NEED to get it up on the vault, IF it's available. This excert was great.

This is the same concert available on Disc 2 of the Santana III 'legacy edition'. 7 additional tracks are featured upon the first 4 here, however 'Oye Como Va' is not featured on the disc!
