Concert Summary

Recorded on New Year's Eve, 1976, this blistering Santana concert was recorded when Carlos and the band were going through numerous changes. After appearing at Woodstock, as well as in the documentary film of the same name, Santana's commercial success took-off. Afterwards, Santana continued to ride a wave of hits throughout most of 1970's, with their chart-topping success tapering off in the latter part of the decade.

When lead vocalist and keyboardist Greg Rolie departed in 1974 to form Journey, Carlos Santanaentire summary

Dig Never Go Back To Lima, the middle section of Oye Como Va. Its a reference to the 1975 bust in the Peruvian capital where I believe the band had all their equipment confiscated. Wow. That's some heavy sh*t.

As PSteno said, it really is a shame you can't hear Tom Coster at all. His keyboard work was always superb and a major ingredient in this band's sound. Look for the 76 concert from Hammersmith Odeon in London for this set with better sound.

Definitely one of the top 5 editions of the Santana band. Material from the highly underrated Festival album really shines here, with killer live versions of Carnaval/Let The Children Play, Revelations and Maria Caracoles. Some of the best Latin tunes in Carlos' whole catalog and its a shame most people have never heard them. Carlos did a lot of singing on those tunes, too. I have a boot DVD of this band in London (the audio was broadcast on KSAN in 77 as part of the BBC live series) doing the same set and it just smokes.

By far an excellent choice to hear and download. Santana kicks ass.

Some of these songs are on Santana's CD Moonflower the mix on that CD the most incredible I've ever heard.

THE SAD THING ABOUT THIS SHOW 'S MIX IS THAT THERE IS NO KEYBOARDS. ONE CHANNEL IS MISSING.

Aiko Jim, the 12:30 start at Winterland was New Year's Eve 1977/78, the next year. Amusingly, neither me nor anyone standing near me that night (Jerry side, about 30 feet back) had received the little flyers, and were mystified by the delay. 12/31/76 Winterland was Montrose/Y&T/Earthquake/Greg Kihn, and 12/31/77 Cow Palace was Santana/Journey/Eddie Money/Starwood

Sorry corry342; The Grateful Dead played at Winterland and Santana played at the Cow Palace. When we arrived at Winterland we were handed a piece of paper that read "Midnight will be at 12:30. Good things come to those who wait" Bill Graham did midnight with Santana then with a police escort Bill raced across town over to Winterland and gave us Midnight after Santana. Bill Graham was the best thing ever to happen to Rock'n'Roll!!!!!

I believe Santana were opening for The Grateful Dead this evening, and the entire event was broadcast on KSAN-fm. The Dead show has since been released as a CD by Rhino.

This must be one of the best Santana gigs on here - amazing music.
