Concert Summary

Between its inception in 1966 to 1984, the band Santana experienced no less that 16 different lineups. After nearly two decades of creating their distinctive brand of Latin-flavored rock, as well as forays into jazz-rock fusion, album sales had significantly declined. Still the band remained an in-demand touring band, performing before sold out audiences worldwide. The musical direction of Santana was constantly evolving and changing, but throughout its history, one constant remained—bandleader Carlos Santana, who had developed one of the most penetrating and highly distinctive styles of…entire summary

It's definetely not from 1984. Not only are the band members wrong (and they didn't return for one show) but the setlist has two songs that they only did on the 1983 tour, "shake you money maker" and "people get ready". The did not perform those two songs at any time on the 1984 tour. In the latter half of '84 the shows were focusing on songs from their upcoming 1985 album "Beyond Appearances". This show is certainly from 1983, not sure what date or venue, but it's impossible to be from Nov 1984 with that lineup listed above and those songs.

Hi all, and thanks for the comments. We're going to stick with the date we have up there now because the band wasn't playing in 11/83, and we know they did play this venue on this date. Not entirely sure how to explain the personnel, except that maybe with it being a home-town show, they shook things up a bit. Thanks for listening!

crombie is correct. The year is wrong, this show is from 11/25/1983. By '84 Alphonso Johnson had replaced Keith Jones on Bass and Tom Coster had left the band (which is a shame as he was a much better keyboardist than C.Thompson). For those interested there is a very accurate and detailed Santana tour history that covers the entire history of the Santana band here - http://pagesperso-orange.fr/santanamigos/menu.htm

Isn't this show from 1983 (Havana Moon tour)? Since Greg is the only vocalist, and Keith Jones and Tom Coster were in the band. Would love to hear some 84-85 and 89-90 shows!

T.G. i was at the show in Toronto in '85 as well (Kingswood Music Theatre) it was my first ever Santana show, i met Alex before the show and got my jean jacket which had a custom painted Santana mural on the back signed by him. I've seen them maybe 10 times since but those 85-87 tours were the best. The '85 band with both Alex and Greg sharing vocals was the best ever though. As for Jack the Hacks comment on Santana never having a good vocalist. Ummm try listening to the Moonflower and Inner Secrets cd's and tell me Greg Walker wasn't a good singer. You're obviously not a fan and have never heard most of their albums to make such a comment.

I agree too, the 78-87 was the best era, although many might disagree. Saw the band in 85 in Toronto, non-stop three-hour show that pulled out all the stops: bass solo, percussion solo, drum solo, two keyboardists, two vocalists. Wow, what a band.

In the history of the Santana band they (whoever that is at the time) have never had a great lead singer. Can only take so much of the guitar shit
