Concert Summary

Known in the industry as the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar came out of San Francisco after relocating there to attend the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. He made his way through the fertile Bay Area club scene until being picked by ex-Edgar Winter Group guitarist Ronnie Montrose to front that axeman's own group.

Ahhhhhhhhh Old Sammy, new Sammy, any Sammy...........a truly fantastic artist and performer. I've had the pleasure of meeting a time or two. and let's not forget "the electric Church" whose tongue was shoved down my throat in 1978.... those were the days

ahhh yes, one of my favorite bassists .. Bill 'The Electric' Church. Ronnie was off making his strange instrumental albums at the time. Frankly, I'm thankful. Cool to hear Denny and Bill playing again here. Tight rhythm section to say the least.

Great concert that ends on a vomit enducing number "You make me crazy". That song bites and Sammy should NEVER play that tune again! Jeebus, check out the You-Tube video of this song - it'll make you LOL!

30 years later, the "You Make Me Crazy" encore, on the heels of Bad Motor Scooter, still sounds as awkward as it did that night. Sammy was having a 'bad management day' around that time, with shorter hair and an attempt at MOR top-40 stuff with 'Musical Chairs'. Fortunately, better heads would prevail. Still, a marvelous show to relive, even at lower volume, and much cleaner as well, for at that event a guy in the row behind us hurled all over my buddy's down jacket. Such was Winterland.

Adendums: Eclipse is indeed Space Station #5. Of note regarding Bad Motor Scooter. Remember the old Napster before "they" shut it down? Well, somebody posted studio outakes of Montrose recording the 2nd album and going through rehersals. Incredible stuff now long gone. However, during Bad Motor Scooter, Alan Fitzgerald cuts loose on the bass solo. During this concert, Church takes the lead with Fitz working the keyboards. Little trivia nuggets which probably mean more to me than anyone else.

Only thing missing from this being Montrose is Ronnie himself. Everybody from the 1st & 2nd albums are here including Alan Fitzgerald and Bill "The Electric" Church. Denny Carmassi rounds out the skins. Only exception is guitarist Gary Pihl! It's rare to hear Spaceage Sacrifice and Make it Last. Have to wonder what was Ronnie thinking?

Wasn't the guitarist on the LP version of Young Girl Blues named Scott Quick? I believe he died tragically (overdose?) and was replaced by Gary Pihl. Anyone confirm?
