Concert Summary

This headlining gig by Sammy Hagar comes a few years after concluding his tenure in Montrose. At the end of a tour opening for Alvin Lee and Ten Years Later, the "Red Rocker" got to headline this Winterland gig, which was the Tenth Anniversary celebration of KSJO, the San Jose-based FM radio station that, at that time, had a hard rock format. A native West Coaster (he was born in Monterey), he seems genuinely excited to be playing to such a large crowd: "This is the loudest goddam audience I ever heard in my life!" he exclaims at one point.

An epic opening jam showcases the group's…entire summary

To drrocket9 The poster you are talking about I have 3 of them if you would like one let me know mikevogel@comcast.net and about Alvin Lee not there at the end of the show. From what i was told is he left early because he was very upset that he was not the Headline and Sammy was.

I took a girl named Cherie Nelson to a Sammy Hagar concert in Duluth in 1985. I had no idea what I would encounter. I loved Sammy's music but I thought he was sort of underground, with "Red" and Montrose. Whoooa doggie JETHRO!!! He rocked the sox off Duluth. They were literally in the rafters. I have been to a lot of concerts there and I never saw Duluth Arena Packed to the friggin' roof like that. I saw Cherie one time after that.I moved her to Minneapolis and said goodbye. Memoreies of Sammy Hagar & Cherie. Superb era.

This brings back memories. Was at this show and WOW! It's amazing how many shows I've found on the vault and realized I was there! Still have the poster they gave away when leaving the show up in my garage.

The quality of this recording is not as good as the '77 Hagar show, but still the historical aspect of this recording is pretty astounding. I had no idea that "Free Money" was ever performed live, much less recorded. Question, though- Sammy is clearly calling up Alvin Lee for the blues jam at the end. I assume he made it, but is not listed in the credits...?

Free Money! That was awesome! Long live Sammy and his spirit! No matter the decade, he makes me feel good.

I was at this great show as well. After the show ended Eddie Money was hanging out onstage drinking a Heineken, and i went up and shook hands. Ten Years Later was hot! Mick Hawksworth playing double-neck bass, and Ted McKenna on drums i do believe. My first time seeing Alvin. just a really really great, concert. i got one of the posters outside after the show, but ruined the darn thing years later. i still kick myself for not taking better care of that poster. you used to be able to find one on this site, for like $100 thanks for this, and lets get that TNL set online as well.

I was at this gig and it fucking smoked as did all of us. The first time I saw Sammy was when he came out with Ronnie M at Winterland which was Sammy first gig with Ronnie. We said who the fuck is this guy? He's great and STILL is!!!

Having experienced Sammy in concert (back in the day), I can assure you that this recording only provides a glimpse of what it was like to be in the room with this tight, rockin' band. Theenergy of this band and the reaction to it were unbelievable... I for one am totally stoked to have this opportunity to hear this alternate concert from this time period, even at the mercy of whatever recording device happened to be available to record it. Yeah, it's not Hi-Fi but who f-ing cares. Listen to what the people on stage are playing, it's in the notes...
