Zephyr was a blues-rock band that formed in Denver in 1968 and basically failed to go....anywhere. Built around the flashy guitar work of Tommy Bolin and the Janis Joplin-esque vocals of Candy Givens, the quintet was on the psychedelic circuit and played at ballrooms and dance halls, earning an impressive reputation in the area and traveling around the States opening for other rock bands, including Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. Zephyr released their self-titled first album in 1969, and while it was received well, the band felt it didn't catch the essence of their live performance. A second album was released in January 1971 titled "Going Back to Colorado" but didn't receive the commercial attention the band strived for. They ultimately broke up shortly thereafter due to competition within the band and creative differences. Bolin left to form Energy and went on to play with James Gang and Deep Purple. Zephyr, though struggling to survive and reforming in various incarnations over the years, ultimately came to end and remains relatively unknown outside of the comfort of the 60's psychedelic genre....more
