Results for Warren Zevon

Warren Zevon had a long and rich relationship with music, commencing at the age of 12 when he began studying with Igor Stravinsky. Warren’s first gig was part of a male/female duo called Lyme and Cybelle, and then he began working as a session musician, most notably with the Everly Brothers, for whom he was musical director and played the piano for. His 1969 solo debut was called “Wanted Dead or Alive” and did not fare well commercially or critically; it took 7 years and a sabbatical to Spain for him to find success for his 1976 self-titled album. 2 years later, his follow up “Excitable Boy” contained the hit “Werewolves of London” which became one of his signature tunes. Alcoholism ended up taking a toll on Warren, and the next decade was relatively impaired by his disease, although he did release the classic album “The Envoy” in 1972. Known as a cynical, sarcastic lyricist, he always had something to say, and a comeback in 1987 with the album “Sentimental Hygiene” was backed by members of REM. Warren rode the 90’s in quirky stride, and when he was diagnosed in 2002 with inoperable lung cancer caused by asbestos inhalation, the world wept. An hour-long farewell visit to Dave Letterman’s show, where Warren had worked periodically since its inception in 1982, found him in jocular spirits. He died in August 2003 right after the release of his final album “The Wind,” shortly after the birth of his twin grandsons....more
