UB40 band members met in a welfare line in 1978 and, fittingly, took their name from a British unemployment benefit form. The multi-cultural lineup boasted street smarts and a working class flair that appropriately evolved into a reggae-pop quiche. UB40 began their career with politically-driven mantras and eventually found their niche in covers.
