Formed in Los Angeles in 1981, this enormously popular heavy metal band built a fan base during its first decade with non-stop touring and word of mouth accolades. Moving to San Francisco in 1983, the band attracted a strong underground following [its debut album was originally titled "Metal Up Your Ass"] and eschewed mainstream radio play. By 1991, the more radio-friendly music of "Black Album" reached the top of the charts, and Metallica became an MTV regular with releases including "Live Shit: Binge and Purge," "Load" and "Reload," and "S&M." In April 2003, the band gained permission to record an MTV video on the grounds of San Quentin Prison for the title song on its new album, "St. Anger," and repaid the favor by throwing a free, hour-long concert for the inmates....more
