As December arrived, the Byrds fell into a paralyzing indifference toward working on new material or strengthening their live set. Perhaps this backslide was accelerated by talk about the reunion of the original Byrds lineup or encouraged by the poor and sometimes scathing reviews of Farther Along.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra represented a genre that actually grew during this blasé year: jazz-rock fusion bands popped up all over the landscape joined by the growing progressive rock movement represented by groups like Queen, E.L.P., and Yes.
