Linda Ronstadt is one of pop music’s more enduring artists. Although she’s explored a variety of genres over the past 40 years, her roots were in folk music, and she began her career in the mid 1960’s with the folk-rock group the Stone Pony’s. After recording three albums with them, she left in 1968 to embark on the successful solo career for which she is best known. The 1970’s were Ronstadt’s decade, as she delivered a string of hits and number one records, and found herself not only a sex symbol, in large part to a provocative spread in Rolling Stone Magazine, but also the “highest paid woman in rock”. She is best known for her music versatility; while primarily known as a country-rock artist, Ronstadt has redefined her sound time and again, dabbling from new wave in the early 80’s, to rhythm and blues, mariachi, jazz, opera, soft rock and even children’s music, ultimately winning 10 Grammy awards in a variety of genres and selling 30 million copies of singles and albums. Her personal life has also garnered some attention, from her public relationship with California’s 34th governor Jerry Brown to her outspoken political and religious views.
