For me, though, Cale's problem is that he's too much a part of that esoteric little Island Records bunch that takes in the cast of the June 1, 1974 album—Ayers, Nico, Eno, and all the others in the foothills of Art. And also, that he's a little too aware of his legend (I, for one, am not sure of the relevance of knowing whether or not he beats up his wife). He seems a little too self-consciously caught up in the persona of the Thinking Man's Rock Star, a little too much the Professional Poet.

In the future, perhaps, everything will be digital, and we’ll be able to order videos of individual songs, which will be instantly transferred over phone lines to our combination personal computer/music disc/video disc player (and billed to our credit accounts at the same time). There will be a broadcast service, so we can be exposed to new product in the first place, but they’ll figure out some way that you can’t copy

But Chairlift is already enjoying its own modest successes and they may not be able to stay out of the limelight for long. The band’s cerebral brand of synth-pop (or, as they like to call it, “25th century folktronica”) recently earned them an independent record deal and they’ve been playing to sold-out crowds in New York as part of a stellar bill that includes MGMT and Yeasayer.
