    The music portion of SXSW kicks off officially on Wednesday, and from the get-go the fest is jam-packed with options: Official showcases, day parties, meeting and greeting with old friends, eating lotsa greasy barbeque and Tex-Mex, soaking in the Texas sun… even though we are well aware that we have the rest of the week to imbibe in all these wondrous things, something about the novelty of the first day makes one want to kick into overdrive and do EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE.     I remember the moment I realized writing a book about the Dead Kennedys would be something of an uphill battle. It was in February of 2002. I had just been introduced to East Bay Ray, the group's long-faced guitarist, in the middle of an empty rock venue in Jacksonville, FL. The DK were on their first "reunion" tour with Dr. Know singer Brendan Cruz taking the place of absent original vocalist Jello Biafra. (read more)
