  • Jimmy Webb: Words and Music

    by Brian BrownJuly 23, 2008Comments (0)

This album reeks of songwriters of the 1970s with their pensive moods and clever word plays. Deal with it. It is the premier of Jimmy Webb stepping out on his own. (read more)

  • Add It Up: Angst in the Music of Violent Femmes and Langhorne Slim

    by Cyrus PhilbrickJuly 9, 2008Comments (1)

All I know is that Violent Femmes are the angstiest (whatever the hell this really means) band I’ve ever heard. And, unlike some metal and hair bands, they didn’t rely on cheap methods of constructing this feeling, such as loud guitars and screeching. Angst coursed through the veins of their music. White Zombie’s landmark 1992 album La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1 certainly seemed like the type of sample-heavy rock freak-out that would align perfectly with a wild, outer space adventure starring Mark Hamill. Also, I figured it would be pretty cool watching Darth Vader parade around to all those bad-ass metal riffs. That alone might keep me from dozing off in the middle of said experiment. The following evening (read more)

  • Part III: Dawson and the Legendary Gig Wagon Races

    by Dinky DawsonJune 25, 2008Comments (0)

I was starting to get a good buzz on when I decided it was time to work onstage. As the set ended, Baz tried to jump up onto the stage from the mixing consoles. Whack!—he missed his footing (read more)
