As country-rock pioneers of the 1950's, the Everly Brothers are one of America's most well known duos, delivering sweet two-part harmonies laced with deep-rooted Appalachian influence. Don and Philip Everly were born in the late 1930's to Kentucky country musicians and were inducted into the music world at a young age performing with their parents. Their first single, "Bye Bye Love," reached number two on the charts in 1957, and prefaced the success the brothers were to find over the next couple of years. The Everly Brothers were responsible for old favorites like "Wake Up Little Susie" and "When Will I Be Loved" which ushered in a lovely poppy charm to the country genre. The 1960's brought with them change, as Don and Philip left their first label, Cadence, for the relatively unknown Warner Brothers Records, were drafted into the army, battled Don's near overdose of speed, and released their sophisticated album "Roots." In 1973, the brothers bitterly split up to pursue solo careers, but reunited in 1983 upon realizing their mutual reliance on one another.“more

For such a seminal band of the 1980s, there’s been very little career reappraisal up until the last few years. Befitting their notorious underdog status, maybe it has taken the record industry’s powers-that-be some 17 years (since their breakup in 1991) to digest their raggedly magnificent music (read more)

  • Girl-Guy Duos: Then vs. Now

    by Joe SullivanAugust 6, 2008Comments (1)

The White Stripes are the ones who made it cool again to be in a male-female rock ‘n’ roll pair. As they’ve evolved, they’ve embraced just about every facet of being a girl-guy duo. They’ve covered a number of different genres, from garage rock to the blues, to country, to punk. On their fourth album, Elephant, it should be noted that they even covered Burt Bacharach/Hal David with “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself”, which is from that same late-’60s era, sound. You're listening to a brand new song, and yet, you feel like you've heard those words somewhere before. Or maybe you recognize familiar song titles popping out in an otherwise original song. Or, you're simply listening, you like what you hear, and you don't even realize (read more)
