He was the Prometheus who crossed the finish line, even if he just picked up his fire down the street in Big Mama Thornton or even Carl Perkins’ neighborhoods (and—let’s be fair—Elvis did add considerable fire of his own to all his best recordings). And his breakthrough record, a performance that still resonates today with all the spine-tingling power and dignity and mystery of a classic rock ‘n’ roll single (weird dead-Elvis cargo cult notwithstanding), was “Heartbreak Hotel.”

"Live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse," the classic punk credo spoken by John Derek to Humphrey Bogart in Knock on Any Door (1949), has proved to be a handy epitaph for a number of deceased musicians, each of whom seems destined to be brought back from the dead in a pop biography. Ex-Byrd and Flying Burrito founder Gram Parsons is the latest to get the between-the-covers treatment.

The apartment belonged to Phil Ochs and was rented by me through Phil's brother Michael. At the time Phil was away on an extended vacation in Africa. I'd never met Phil but I'd heard his music, read some of his writings, and seen pictures of him. Now I was living with his possessions, in fact his life, all around me. It was an untidy apartment, but large and homey nevertheless. From this I deduced Phil to be an untidy, disorganised character
