It was the sound of the sample of “Straight to Hell” by the Clash that first drew me to “Paper Planes”, M.I.A.'s irresistible and ubiquitous alternative hip-hop track. Though one fine sampled loop alone cannot carry a tune. The lyrical thread of “Straight to Hell”, combined with Maya Arulpragasam's insouciant rap style and slightly obscure lyrics, punctuated by pop, pop, pop gunshots and a percussive caching of a cash register, not only created controversy, but also built a mystery

Like a new age beatnik who broadcasts the subterranean news through his songs, poems, artwork, and stories that reach across generations (his latest album is No One Left to Crown), Havens fits Jack Kerouac's description of Beats as "characters of a special spirituality." A self-proclaimed "song singer" and "all-around expressionist," he was not only present, but he participated in the cultural shift that began with the Beats and carried over into a mass movement in the ’60s.

There’s always a clamor on Haight Street, even now at night: neon lights, blinking lights, colored lights, and people standing outside yakety-yaking their current affairs on cell phones. Music spills out of doorways and thumps through walls, with shouts and laughs added in to concoct the sound of good times.
