Concert Summary

Irish blues guitarist Rory Gallagher was in peak form when this energetic and highly entertaining set was recorded at the legendary Bottom Line club in New York City in the fall of 1978. Gallagher had been on the European music scene for nearly a decade (and a viable name in the U.S. for almost six years) when he blew into the Big Apple for his first NY show in almost two years.

Gallagher had returned to his power trio line up of bass, drums and guitar for this tour, after several years touring with a keyboardist,…entire summary

Rory Gallagher was unquestionably the best performer of his day, not to mention his guitar work. Check his website for the quote from Jimi Hendrix. His early respect for the blues as well as his pioneering songwriting within the context of a power trio is simply amazing.

Grew up in the same town (cork, Ireland) as Gallagher, every year he came home for xmas, and did 2 gigs in the city hall, these gigs were the highlight of the year for us, just one big sweating heaving throng of long haired check shirt wearing lads and some babes also! He has a massive following here still. I was lucky enought to catch him jam in a local blues bar, the Subway, on McCurtain street and the end of the hill where he lived. There is a music shop right next door, the bar is long gone, and they maintain a shrine to RG there to this day, with one of his replica Strats in a case in the window. I caught him play the Palace theatre in Cork the venue where Tasts started (on the boards!) the year before he passed away and his last gig was an acoustic set in the local technical college for an arts week. His Funeral was massive, some great musicians attend along with the people of Cork to pay respects to this great ICON of the 70's and the low 80's here in Cork. Its great to hear these live recordings of those early shows, great compliment to the Irish Tour 74 live album, I was at that gig also! May he rest in peace, thanks for the memories and keep the music live!... DC

i love this man, i heard him for first time in 1995, when he died. so sad to know his music the same week he passed away... gallagher knew what the rock is about!

An awesome set from RG. The performance is up to his usual ridiculously high standards, while the recording quality is superb. Why these Bottom Line shows have never seen official release is a mystery to me. They would make such a great box-set; as comprehensive a portrait of an artist at a given point in their career as you could wish for. Enjoy - it's impossible not to.....

Okay, the second question was really a comment.

2 questions. If this was the second set of the night, how come it is listed as the early show? If this one lacked some of the surprises of the other, the other must have been incredible.

Gotta love Rory!!! It is sad to see that he slipped under the radar for all those years. Better than some of the best in my book.

Last comment: How can you compare the two? What's the point? Rory is Rory and Stevie was off the back of JDW111, Albert King and Jimi.
