Concert Summary

This is an extended set by Rick Wakemen performed at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom in November of 1975. Wakeman had risen to international prominence as the keyboard wizard of progressive rock, though perhaps sharing the title at various times with Emerson, Lake, & Palmer's Keith Emerson. Progressive rock was in its heyday when Wakeman embarked on his third solo tour to promote his Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It was an ambitious concept album, his third such record in four years. The King Arthur story makes for a great backdrop,…entire summary

Not only is he greatly talented, he is most gracious in person. I met him and we chatted almost 1/2 an hour! Was very interested in my opinons, apparently. ( I play keys as well. ) Kindred spirits maybe? In any case, he blew me away musically, and made my whole year!. I met him in the early 90's on the Wakeman and Wakeman tour.

I caught this tour at Mershon Auditorium on the OSU campus in Columbus, Ohio. It was the 1st show of this U.S. tour. They had some keyboard sound problems and mix issues which irritated Rick and so they took an intermission to sort things out. It didn't matter to those of us there, it was still a very exciting concert. To me the highlight was "Merlin the Magician." It was my very first rock concert (seeing the Carpenters, Seals & Crofts, the Jackson 5 and the Osmond Brothers with my family in the early 70s at the Ohio State Fair doesn't really count or compare, now does it!)

I was 13 in 1975 and living in England at the time. This was my first concert performed at the Wembley Empire Pool Stadium. The Myth and Lengends of King Arthur ON ICE! He played on an "island castle" in the center of the rink with a full philharmonic orchestra and choir, surrounded by Knights and Wizards skating through dry ice and sword fighting. It was wild

I was at this one. Winterland was always a wonderfully crazy place, and being that this show was right after Halloween, the spirits were in full force throughout the crowd. Renaissance opened the show. They were touring the Scheherazade album, and they were good enough that I could have left after they played and been satisfied. But Rick and his band made it a perfect night. Funny story of the evening was during the show Ashley tossed his tambourine in the air and it came right down on Wakeman's grand piano. I'll never forget the look that Rick gave him and the cringe that Ashley made when he saw Rick's face. I should mention that when Yes toured "Going For The One" I got a chance to socialize a bit with Sir Wakeman. Really nice guy, we shared some drinks by the pool at his hotel across from the Colesseum. Magic moments from long ago... Best wishes to Rick and all those who appreciate his talents.

Saw Rick when he toured with his son Adam back in the early 90's... simply awesome! Perhaps the best show I've ever seen. He's fabulous when playing with Yes (had the pleasure of seeing him tour with them 4 times), but it's impossible to truly appreciate his talent until you see him solo.

I believe I saw the same tour in Liverpool in April '76. Really good show and with good company celebrating my 18th birthday. So long ago! These days Rick is a brilliant DJ on Planet Rock in the UK on Saturday mornings too!
