Concert Summary

Richie Furay has been called "a founding father of country rock," and that title is by no means an exaggeration. As a member of Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills and Neil Young, Furay was instrumental in creating the earliest examples of the country/rock blend (along with a handful of others such as the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers). There is no doubt that Furay's post-Springfield band, Poco, was a huge influence on the Eagles, and that group even grabbed Poco's bassist, Timothy B Schmidt, shortly after Furay left.

Great selection of songs and this group sounds good!

I have had the pleasure of meeting Richie and hearing him perform. The first time was at his church in the Boulder, CO area, where he happened to be leading worship. The second time was in Grand Junction, CO (Yes, the same GJ that Rusty Young wrote about) at a church where he performed. Still has amazing range, which shows that turning his life over to Jesus and walking away from the drug and alcohol scene saved not only his soul, but his voice as well. I also was able to get him to sign my "Pickin' Up the Pieces" vinyl (which I later got signed by Rusty and George Grantham--Just missing Messina's). Good set here. Wish I could see a Richie-led Poco...!

This is Richie Furay "pickin' up the pieces" after Poco and Souther Hillman Furay. The long medley of his hits from Poco and Buffalo Springfield is a knockout, and hearing "On The Way Home" from his days with the Springfield, sent chills up my spine. Not only did did the Eagles steal Tim Schmidt from Poco, Randy Meisner resurfaced after Poco's first album as the Eagles' original bassist. In case you've ever seen Poco's appearance on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, that was me and my friend Howard in the third row. Unfortunately, Furay and Schmidt had just left the band.
