Concert Summary

When Chick Corea moved on from his tenure with Miles Davis, like John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, he created a new band that could pursue his vision of blending diverse musical elements, but unlike the others, he didn't dive into electric instrumentation right away. The initial Return To Forever band was primarily an acoustic unit with a fairly straightforward Latin-flavored jazz approach. The music was complex and adventurous to be sure, but it was coming from a significantly different place than Mahavishnu Orchestra or Weather Report, the other profoundly…entire summary

Stanley rules the roost, but the rest of the band catches up and sometimes eclipses him. all in good, clean fun though. great concert, incredible dynamics.

I remember seeing this group back in 1973. Connors is a woefully underrated guitarist and deserves more acclaim for his work with RT. Corea is a virtuoso, as are the rest of the band, but I was never able to fully engage with this brand of fusion, unlike the music of Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra. It is probably sacrilege to say this but I find Corea's electric music rather flashy and pompous. Perhaps I will change my mind with repeated listening.

Space Circus part 1 is (mistakenly) indexed as part of Children's Song. It begins at 3:22 mark.

Excellent concert. It had a real '70s live feel with the distortion from the electic piano and Stanley's bass. Never saw this lineup with Connors on guitar but caught the reunion last year with the incredible Al DiMeola, in my opinion the best of the many lineups of RTF. Caught them only once in the '70s with the "MusicMagic" tour with Chick's wife Gail on vocals. They played about 3-1/2 hours and that is when I first became a die-hard Stanley Clarke fan. The best bassist there is!

This is music at its best, live, spontaneous... and powerful! This version of Return to Forever MAY be my absolute favorite grouping. So happy, though I missed this particular tour, to have it all right here in the Vault. It always takes me to another place...

I was at this concert and recorded both the RTF and Mahavishnu sets that are in trading circulation. Nice to have a SB of this show. Bill Connors!!!!
