Concert Summary

Upon listening to the early recordings of Renaissance, it is hard to imagine that this band came about when three-fifths of the blues-rock group, the Yardbirds, decided they wanted to explore a mix of English folk, rock, and progressive music. By the time this recording was made for the King Biscuit Flower Hour in 1979, none of the original members were left, and the band was a far cry from the original sound it created in 1969.

The original 1969 line-up of Renaissance included Keith Relf (vocals, guitar, harmonica) and Jim McCarty (drums, vocals), both from the Yardbirds. (The…entire summary

Been listening to this concert, and its pretty interesting to hear how much the band change over the years. After listening to the albums, and live recordings like "Live at Carnegie Hall", the orchestras just can't be replaced by the late 1970's synths that became more prevalent later in the band's career. John Tout did an amazing job considering he had to replicate the orchestra himself! JMatt19, where did you, or your friend, ever get the recording of Renaissance from Oneonta NY 1976? I have a few rare Renaissance recordings here and there that friends have shared with me as well. As you say, fidelity is not always so good, but I beleive the love of the music is the point! Did anyone get a chance to see them on their recent Oct 2009 tour around the MD, PA, NY and NJ area? I saw them a few times - lucky to be in the right place I guess, but they were fantastic! I was very impressed with how strong the band was, and how good Annie and Mick sounded. Disappointing that Sullivan, Tout and Camp were not there, but good to see them out performing again. Hopefully we will see them again in 2010.

For Dashkee94: I have a recording of the same concert in Oneonta NY 1976. A friend of mine made it for me. Fidelity is pretty bad at this point. I was working in a band at I think a Holiday Inn hotel. Renaissance was staying at this hotel, and while we were playing our last set, they came into lounge and we met. After a few drinks, the manager of nightclub let us stay there all night and we had a jam session with Renaissance. I managed to stay in touch with John Tout by letter for about a year, and even have some recordings of our jam session.I live in the Southern NJ area, and I understand Annie lives around the Doylestown PA area. Been trying to contact her. She should herte these recordings.

I saw them in May '79 at Drew(?) University-this and other dates were rescheduled from some winter college shows-one of which I went to at Rutgers (Horslips opening), only to see equipment being put BACK into the trucks an hour before shwtime because Annie had a bad sore throat that night. I wished Horslips were allowed to do their set, but being contracted as opening band, it was not meant to be. Too bad-this was a dream bill! Anyway, did see them at Drew with Stanky Brown Group opening and Renaissance did perform four songs from "Azure d'Or" before it was released, including my favorite, "Winter Song". Terry Sullivan and John Tout left shortly afterward. Last, any chance of Wolfgang's Vault aquiring any Renaissance shows broadcast on WNEW FM, specifically on November 1974 at the Academy of Music (without orchestra)-this was my first Renaissance show. Also, the broadcast of their last appearance at the Capitol in Passaic, NJ in May 1978 would be very nice.

Just my luck. Went to see them at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Maryland. Sat in the rain for hours. Technical problems caused cancellation of the show. Been traumatized ever since. Annie is still one of my fav vocalist ever.

renaissance opened for a band in the phila spectrum many years ago, don't remember for whom it was. i hadn't listened to them, so knew nothing about them. annie haslam wore a white gown, and ashes burning is still today something i play at least once a month. and cry when she hits that note. my wife (now ex) and i didn't get out of the parking lot for a half-hour (no, wasn't the traffic, we were in the backseat). amazing band, and the voice is among the most versatile you'll ever hear.

The first time I saw Renaissance was when I this tour stopped at the Mann in Philly that same summer. Over the years I've seen subsequent incarnations (including at the Schubert Theater in '80 or '81 with Raphael Rudd on keyboards, and yes, harp!). It's a long discussion as to why no breakout U.S. hit but suffice it to say they were an original that defied easy definition - an outstanding band with classical influences and samplings featuring the amazing vocal talents of Ms. Haslam. I'm looking forward to the show on the 20th as well. Any of the Philly fans remember the WIOQ Toys for Tots Christmas show at the old Valley Forge Music Fair in '84?

I had the pleasure of seeing Renaissance every time they rolled through Philly in the mid to late 70's and they never disappointed. The DJ Ed Sciacky (RIP) was a big fan and did a heck of job introducing the band to Phila fans and playing the bands music frequently. They were very big on the East Coast but didn't have countrywide fame (as far as I know). My favorite album - Ashes are Burning. I would love to see this band get back together. As mentioned Haslam with Tout doing a show at the sellersvile Theater 9/20. Now we just need Terry and Mick to get onboard.

Wow! Thank you for adding this. I saw this line-up in 1976 in Oneonta, NY, and they were stunning. Annie actually started to bust on us for applauding too much, but we loved her for it (all that talent and spunk, too.) I saw Joan Baez in Central Park in '75; Annie Haslam was better, hands down. For those of you who haven't seen her, she's singing at the Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA on September 20th. This just makes me more anxious for the 20th to get here. Again, thanks.
