Concert Summary

From his early blues and jazz combos to his R&B review-style big bands to his landmark country and soul recordings, few artists have had a greater impact on 20th century music than Ray Charles. Now an American cultural and musical icon, Charles' explorations across musical boundaries literally changed the face of popular music. Succeeding in whatever musical genre he chose to explore, Charles took what had previously been a black and white territorial map and fueled it full of color. Not only one of the most emotionally engaging and easily recognizable voices of all time, Charles was a…entire summary

The correct line-up of the Ray Charles Orchestra was:
Blue Mitchell, Bill King, Herbie Anderson, Marshall Hunt - trumpets; Joe Randazzo, Henry Coker, Glenn Childress, Fred Morell - trombones; Andy Ennis, David Newman, Jay Cloyd Miller, Curtis Peagler, Leroy Cooper - saxophones; Ben Martin - guitar; Edgar Willis - bass; Ernie Elly - drums; Kenny Lupper - piano, organ.

Actually, the tape ran out as Ray and the orchestra were playing the intro to "GEORGIA ON MY MIND". DARN! But I enjoyed the tracks that were captured (and certainly enjoyed the Ray Charles 1960 Newport Jazz Fest set recently posted on The Vault). Thanks!

Here's to hoping the Newport Jazz Archives contain (and will release) the 1958 performances by The Genius!

The real highlight of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics was going to see Ray Charles play at Centennial Park. The place was jammed and I took the MARTA train from Chamblee and at every station more people hopped on until they couldn't fit another on the train.Crowd was well over 50,000. Ray was fantastic. He went back and forth with the Raelets all night.I can still hear Ray singing......."Georgia on my mind" thru the Olympic lights and energy going on.One of my best concert memories of my lifetime. He got my gold metal that night!

Nice tracks, and thanks! Any chance that the rest of the concert still exists?

Hearing Mable John singing "Runnin' Out" is worth the price of admission. Incredible.

This is lame. I mean, it's great, what's there, but to bill a concert as "Ray Charles" and offer only a partial concert, and of that only 3 minutes is The Genius singing, is lame. If you had other Bro' Ray concerts in your archive, presenting this snippet could be forgiven (or dismissed). And saying you warned us in the concert notes is also lame; who reads those before listening?

I Want To Do everything for you swings. Their voices are beautiful.

If there is a God in Heaven, you will find a pristine copy of the rest of that concert.
