Being a cult of his own devise/demise Randy Newman hid behind his glasses and rag ticking like a bomb to explode. That was the way I saw him in my minds eye wondering why he felt he had to hide all that talent behind the mask of the Jester. But I loved him just the same, who am I to judge? He opened for Bonnie Raitt at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA in the summer of 1977 or 78' (sorry, time melts). We expected to see him at his grand piano making sardonic comments of his existential hymns as Randy always did. Little Criminals had made him a star, maybe he caught that fervor for on that sunny day he brought along some friends from LA & we all got his heat & he blew us all away. That day’s feat was a treat beyond compare. If he made any comments sublime they were lost to the wind and gone astray. He/they cooked! The MUSIC came out of the funny songs and heads flew off. Thank you Randy, I’ve always loved you and I always will but I will especially love you for that sunny day at the Greek when you decided to let out your mighty sword and people danced. The day you took the red out of Bonnie’s hair. If there is a copy somewhere and it came out to share, you could make my life all over again.

when i hear "rednecks," i don't pretend superiority or even intelligence. i simply marvel at the cross-fire cynicism and genius of the performer. long live the true Piano Man.

Something about randy newman you can feel in your skin, I dont know how his father Paul newman felt about his political correctness? I first heard about him with I LOve LA, TIME cafe in NYC did a tribute to him, later in life i was living in New Orleans, and he was like the locals spokes person, you heard him everywhere.

Soul-filled stuff. Brings me back to the old days of the first Big Recession; food stamps, plant closings, gas lines, and Miller beer. Clung to Newman's words then like floating wreckage ... and will do so again (minus the Miller beer).
