Concert Summary

Quicksilver Messenger Service opened the show for Eric Burdon and the Animals shortly after their first album was released.

With limited stage time, they don't jam as much as usual, but they do perform some of their best material from the first LP. Surprisingly, they open both sets with the most adventurous and longest track on that album, "The Fool," which was usually positioned late in their shows around this time.

Both sets also contain…entire summary

QMS always came to play whatever they were playing. They nailed allot of very cool numbers for records but like everyone else in SF at the time " you had to be there" John was a streched as Yorma trying to drage these benders into the band as they happened. Was always great to be there and be around when the y were playing. John went on and did his Cpperhead thing which let him just play! All is good. Just another page of SF creativity and why eveyone came to SF in the 60's. EVERYONE!

this version of "the Fool" is priceless! He almost rips his throat out. "Who..." is a bit too fast, but there are several interesting revisions of the arrangement which more then makes up for it. The multi instruments jamming after the sax solo in "Gold..." shows these guys at their finest: the arrangement goes out the window for this wonderful slice of San Francisco music at it's finest.

The sound quality is a bit muddy but the music is great with good sound balance so you can hear all four players well. The version of "Gold & Silver" with Steve Schuster is one of the best I've ever heard. Two interesting and very different versions of "The Fool" as well. If you ever liked anything by QMS don't overlook these two sets.
