Concert Summary

Near the tail end of 1968, at the peak of the original lineup's powers, Quicksilver Messenger Service began recording the live performances that would form the bulk of the material for their second album, Happy Trails. Now universally considered to be one of the greatest San Francisco psychedelic rock albums ever recorded, it remains one of the defining examples of that era. Recorded on the final night of three extraordinary performances at Fillmore West, this recording contains yet another incendiary version of "Smokestack Lightning." A staple of their sets at the time, the band…entire summary

Per Nick49s comment, its very odd that there were professionally recorded Quicksilver sets this weekend (thankfully) and nary a whiff of what the Dead played. Did Captitol engineers refuse to let the Dead run their decks? Is there some secret, primo 68 Dead in the Capitol vaults?

This was an amazing run The Quick & The Dead & Linn County. I saw two of the shows have no idea which ones but it was Quintessential Quicksilver both nights-QMS Once Again Deliveres! Dead was Very Hot too & Linn County was a good band-They were great shows.I saw Quicksilver & The Dead quite a few times being a SF Bay kid and this one stands out as a very High Time in the Wild West. Pre-Dino Quicksilver Messenger Service..Wadda Band!!

Thanks, Colton, and good ear. We'll be putting up the correct version shortly. Thanks for listening!

Is the wrong version of "Smokestack Lightning" posted here? To my ears, this is the same performance of the song as the one on the Q.M.S. Fillmore West 11/9/68 show that also appears in "Wolfgangs Vault". The remarks made by the band are identical and the timings (11:46) are the same. This should not because, as the review for this show states: "Recorded on the final night of three extraordinary performances at Fillmore West, this recording contains yet another incendiary version of "Smokestack Lightning." A staple of their sets at the time, the band must have been strongly considering this song for the album, as excellent versions were captured from every night of this run. This is the longest of the three versions and the most compelling of the run, serving as a remarkable addition to the material featured on Happy Trails."

i can see why its not on happy trails its a great track but its slow and plodding out of context for happy trails but i agree with tmyawtd , i want# 2 of delux edition box set or #1 if tmyatd punks out due to high cost

Great idea tmyawtb. These guys were fantastic live. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I am old enough to have seen them along with a lot of the other San Francisco bands at the Fillmore. Great venue on that old basketball court. Great light shows, those were good times.

Just one song? Jeez. How about all 3 nights? How about it, Capitol Records? Everybody and their brother is coming out with "deluxe" versions of old albums. A Happy Trails extended box would make a nice addition to my collection.
