Concert Summary

This performance was the first of three extraordinary QMS shows from an inspired run at the Fillmore West. The wonderful quality of the recording aside, this is just a fantastic performance.

Unfortunately, this is only a partial recording, as the tape begins with the show in progress. The first track, "Cowboys and Indians," is an outstanding, unreleased instrumental that contains all the elements that made this lineup so well respected among San Francisco musicians of the day. By late 1968, when this concert was recorded, Cipollina and Duncan's guitar playing was reaching peak levels…entire summary

Wow, this is fantastic! Sounds as good as Happy Trails. The most psychedelic of the psychedelic bands, IMO. These guys truly had some sort of musical ESP going on. Really bummed I never got to hear Cipollina in person. One of the masters with a totally unique and identifiable style and sound. Ah to have a time machine...

Thanks Alaska. After all these years, yes now I can make out the "..anything you want!" I still can't make out the first word, but what you say certainly is plausible and makes sense. (Have to admit after all these years it's a little anti-climactic so I'm slightly disappointed - but what else was I expecting, the Meaning of Life, ha,ha?...On the OTHER hand, maybe "Do anything you want!" IS the meaning of life!!!!!) Jesus, Joseph, and Mary! Thanks Alaska!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he says "do anything you want", which means (to me) that even though this music is clearly well rehearsed, there are still improv moments. If you compare different concert tapes you hear different tempos and slight modifications throughout. What a great band!

I have always thought it was "What do you think it was?"

Wow...echoes from a time that once was and will never be again...Mona here may very will be the same one on Happy Trails, but Maiden and Calvary are clearly not...By the way, something I've always wondered...I know it's not important but On Happy Trails, deep into Cavalry, one of the guys clearly swept up in the power of the moment shouts out something from the stage... was never able to make it out...by any chance anyone out there know what that ancient echo from the past was? And NO JOKES, like "Anyone got a roach clip?" :)

What a great group! I had never even heard of these guys before, but what a find! Long live the San Francisco Sound!

Saw them at a little joint called the Whiskey A-Go-Go. Sat about 20ft above them on the huge speakers and they nailed everything. I couldn't hear for a couple of days after that, but it was the best concert I ever went to!
