Concert Summary

Presented here is an extraordinary half hour reel of tape recorded at Fillmore West following the show on June 18, 1970. The bill that night featured an eclectic roster of Rockwell, Don Ellis & His Orchestra, and hometown heroes Quicksilver Messenger Service headlining. Just days before, QMS had returned home from an extended stay in Oahu, Hawaii, where they were rehearsing new material. This was a pivotal time for the group, with Dino Valenti taking on the frontman role of lead vocalist and primary songwriter. The result would be QMS's breakthrough What About Me and Just Forentire summary

Around the 13:30 mark of the long jam, they get into Dark Star territory. Really trippy.
Also reminiscent of the half hour Who Do You Love from 4-15-70. Some of the best
Quicksilver jamming ever. There were some rehearsal tapes of the Shady Grove edition with Nick Gravenites that surfaced a few years ago (Nicksilver), but those lacked any focus or drive. This is the real deal.
I saw the 6 man band at the Olympic in L.A. on 3/21/70. What a shame Dino drove out
Nicky and John. But, for that brief, shining moment in the first half of 1970, before Dino
took over completely, this was the best band around. Cipollina, Duncan and Hopkins up front
    were an incredible combination.

"Its Yours" was sung by David Freiberg.

@bri56 - we don't have any more recordings of this Nicky Hopkins quartet lineup in the Vault - this was a one-off jam session a year after they played together on the "Shady Grove" album.

Is there more recordings of this quartet? Pretty damn good stuff here.

    What a great find!
Hopefully the rest of this night shows up as well some day...

This is sublime, and I've only heard half of the first tack so far! Always thought Shady Grove was a very underrated album. I'd love to have heard them play the whole thing live.

This is a truly remarkable piece of tape, showing what might have been. The Shady Grove quartet QMS played a small number of mostly undocumented shows in 1969, including some in out of the way places (like Seaside, CA). If this is what they sounded like, it must have been pretty good.

At some of their 1969 shows, Nick Gravenites did some guest vocals, so perhaps the "mystery song" was a Gravenites song, with vocals by John. Still very interesting, no matter what it was.

Is that really John singing (well, shouting) the vocals on "It's Yours"? If so, he was able to sing while playing guitar parts totally unrelated to the vocal. It also makes me re-think who was singing some of the parts on Happy Trails. I was never real happy with the Dino-fronted version of the band, and I really missed John when he left QMS.

And this recording makes me miss him even more. RIP to John and Nicky.

YES! This is why I love you guys. Thank you. Keep digging 'em out. I wish I could help blow the dust off the treasure of tapes and try to figure out what's what with you all.
