Concert Summary

This is Quicksilver's first night of a two-night, four-show run, opening for Electric Flag and headliners Steppenwolf. This live concert recording is essential listening. Fans of the quartet lineup that recorded the first QMS LP and Happy Trails will love these sets, as they took place right between those first two LPs.

This is possibly the best overall early QMS set ever captured on tape. It's a sheer delight for fans of the band's…entire summary

This is why I'm still bummed Dino's voice, ego & act got in & took over. I'm from SF Bay & got to see QMS pre-Dino quite a bit for years. I thought they were Amazing Live & this gig back east is a Hot night but I never saw This band, the real Quicksilver Messenger Service not Deliver! This gives me chills like I got when I was a kid-Thanks!

I often rediscover QMS. I just rediscovered QMS for the umpteenth time. I've been listening to all their albums while transferring them to CD so I can cart them about. The Happy Trails Album was given to me by some rich kid at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville New Jersey in 1969 or 1970. One of my first albums. I was maybe 14 or 15. I am a long time guitar player and I am constantly amazed by Duncan and Cipp. Happy Trails everybody!

The beautful track "The Fool" is a classic QMS song with Cipollina playing great guitar.Frank Marino has commented that this was a favourite Cipollina track.Listen to that Gibson SG!!!

In answer to bri56's question, Dino Valenti was originally supposed to be in QMS from the start but had to spend a year in jail for a pot bust in 1966. My wife saw him get booed off the stage of the Fillmore playing between the Buddy Miles Express and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. She later lived next door to Gary and Dino on 4th Street in San Rafael in 1969. There's a great youtube live appearance of QMS from that time videotaped at Sonoma State up in Cotati all Quicksilver fans should check out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D79ujliNh4Q&fmt=18 You can see Dino not doing much of anything here. Duncan and Cipp are in top form though.

I wish the old Quicksilver lasted longer instead of transforming into Dino's band, which wasn't all that bad anyway. Gary Duncan was great but left after Happy Trails for some reason, only to return a year later with Dino in tow. What was up with that?

Reminder when the tough decision was Fillmore or Avelon.Sometimes had to go to Ave on Thurs, Fillmore Firday then decide which was better and go there Sat. That was when the choices were great or getting great or greater. Jimi would put it like this: common yualnowatImsayn

Thank You Wolfgang, Mercury and all the other Gods responsible for this wonderful experience. I saw them that same month at the Boston Tea Party, in support of their 1st album, but don't recall "Smokestack", or "Codine". I miss John every day and can't wait to cross over and jam with him. I've never had a more positive hero, other than Duane Allman and some of my old jams bear that out. Peace and Love Brothers and Sisters
