Concert Summary

Founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe, the now legendary Preservation Hall was originally an art gallery, run by Larry Bornstein, in the heart of New Orleans' French Quarter. Bornstein began holding informal jam sessions for his friends, out of which grew the concept of Preservation Hall. The small, intimate venue served no drinks, had no air conditioning, but it welcomed people of all ages who were interested in nurturing and preserving the traditions of the early 20th century jazz pioneers. What a perfect way to get in the Mardi Gras mood! Sensational set for the season! Jazzed in Wyo

I forgot to mention, the love between Billie and DeDe was still strong in 1971. Billie appeared to dote on DeDe so that his blindness was not a trial. We should all be so lucky!

This is great! I saw them when they came to the University of California, Irvine, must have been around 1971. After giving a concert on a Friday night, Billie, DeDe and Jim Robinson came in on Saturday afternoon to a special meeting of a jazz class in which I was enrolled. They spent several hours playing for us and telling stories about what it was like when things were in full swing. Billie completely swept us off our feet. Somehow she had managed to get the ingredients together and had cooked red beans and rice for everyone in the class! She said that it was just something that she wanted to do! Even as a young person with a lot of energy, that would have been a challenge that I would not been able to undertake (they must have traveled with the ingredients, because there was nowhere to buy them in Irvine in those days). Jim Robinson was equally amazing. He was over 80 and still blowing the trombone strong. He had played for so long, his cheek puffed out like a bullfrog. Watching it up close, I was anxious that it would pop right there in front of all of us! Panama is one of the best songs ever written in America. Thanks for making this available and turning up the heat on some classic memories!
