The original Fillmore was only open for two and a half years, but its legacy to live rock music is incredible. Here are a few tracks in the Vault that were performed during this seminal period in rock history.

    The(pre-dino)Classic Quicksilver Messenger Service Delivers!

  • roadrocket | Thursday, February 25, 2010 | 11:54 am

Quicksilver Messenger Service is the showstopper here with Gary Duncan doing an absolutely greasy, dead on, chitlin' circuit version of the great Howlin Wolf classic. They NAIL it. Gary's growling vocals along with the rock solid rhythm section of David Freiberg and Greg Elmore is spellbinding. Of course, stoking the fire is the twin guitar attack of Gary and John Cipollina. QMS were actually a fine electric blues band in the early days. As young as they were when this was recorded, it sounds like they had been gigging the South side of Chicago for years.
They were the band that people still talk about. Their legendary shows with the extended jams, which later morphed into "Happy Trails", are here, thankfully well-preserved.

Could the Chuck Berry track be from the famous show Bill Graham detailed in his memoirs? I love that story of how Bill quickly learned that when you deal with Chuck, it's Chuck's way or the highway! Hilarious!

    Anthony:

Naturally, you're 100% correct about that being Buddy Guy, at least on vocals, and I would assume, guitar, and not Muddy Waters. That's why you're one of the most erudite music guys ever. You always–to paraphrase Zimmy– "know your song well/before you start singing."

Wonderful stuff, but I think that version of "Three O'Clock in the Morning" is by Buddy Guy.
