Playlist Description
This playlist features some of the most mesmerizing slide guitar performances in the Concert Vault. From early Delta bluesmen to the rockers they inspired, there's plenty to sink your ears into here, so sit back and enjoy the notes between the notes.
You'll find solo acoustic performances by Mississippi Fred McDowell and Muddy Waters, while John Hammond's channeling of Robert Johnson during "Terraplane Blues" is downright creepy. Elmore James is honored by Fleetwood Mac's Jeremy Spencer and The Allman Brothers Band, and Duane Allman even makes a second appearance here while sitting in with the Grateful Dead on "It Hurts Me Too."
Other highlights include Mick Taylor kicking things off with the Rolling Stones, Coco Montoya featured as lead guitarist in a 1991 version of John Mayall's Blues Breakers, and future Stones member Ron Wood shredding with Rod Stewart and the Faces. We've got two versions of Little Feat from 12 years apart, first with Lowell George in 1976, and later with Bonnie Raitt leading the group in 1988. Luther Dickinson of the Black Crowes and Jeff Beck show a more tender side of slide playing, while things get heavy with Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown, Rod Price and Foghat (a group started by former members of Savoy Brown), and George Thorogood, who's been known to use sandpaper on his copper pipe to add some extra grit to his slide playing.
There's more of course, but I've already said way too much, and these slide guitarists say it better anyway.
