Thelonious Monk's most famous and oft-recorded tune, the moody ballad 'Round Midnight,' was written in 1941 and first recorded by the Cootie Williams Orchestra in 1944. Miles Davis played a famous version at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival (heard here) which led to a lucrative recording contract with Columbia Records later that year. It's been recorded over a thousand times. Hear eight brilliant versions culled from the Vault.
