Playlist Description
This playlist samples some of the best prog rock in the Vault starting near the genre's beginnings with bands like Pink Floyd and King Crimson, representing prog's peak years with groups like Genesis, Yes, and ELP, and eventually heading into the '80s when bands like Rush merged their prog rock roots with more radio-friendly songs. There are also some sub-genres represented, like the prog-folk of Jethro Tull and the Strawbs, the symph rock of the Moodly Blues and ELO, and even a twist of funk in Steve Morse's Dixie Dregs (before he went on to join Kansas in the 80's).
With elements of jazz and classical music, complex harmonic progressions, different time signatures within songs, long-developing passages, and lyrics that use archetypal imagery from folklore and science fiction, each song here is a trip in itself. As a whole, this mix can be quite an adventure - enjoy.
