By: Newport Days
In the summer of 1971, more fans showed up in Newport than the Jazz Festival could handle, leading to a raucous gate-crashing and George Wein's decision to move the festival to New York the following the year. The music presented here was hosted at Yankee Stadium on the penultimate evening of the week-long festival on Saturday, July 8th. There was a mixture of funky and soulful sets from Roberta Flack, Lou Rawls, Herbie Mann and Les McCann, as well as an all-star jazz performance that included Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey, among others.
