"I Want to Hold Your Hand" reached #1 on February 1, 1964, the plane landed in LaGuardia Airport on the 7th, and they made their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show on the 9th. That week marked the advent of Beatlemania and, accompanied by a general increase in Anglophilia, the British Invasion. The poppy, guitar-driven rock n' roll championed by The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and others dominated the charts for a few years and forever changed the face of music in America.
While the period of 1964-1967 is considered the true British Invasion, our friends from across the pond also played a large part in initiating the heavy metal, punk and new-wave movements as well. The tracks contained here present a survey of some of the most important bands to come from Britain over the past 40 years presented in chronological order (based on the date of recording, not the date that the artists' success was greatest). These songs reflect the evolution of popular music and represent some of Britain's greatest exports, ranking right up there with lawn mowers, rubber bands, and The Office.
