Playlist Description
From monster sing-alongs to unrehearsed jam sessions, it's always intriguing to hear an all-star cast of musicians performing on stage together.
1) The Human Rights Now! Tour of 1988 featured sets from Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman and Youssou N'Dour every night, as well as local talent from where they were playing. At the start of every show, the ensemble would sing this Bob Marley classic together.
2) Bill Graham produced the S.N.A.C.K. benefit concert in 1975 to help raise money to support after-school programs in Bay Area public schools. To close a star-studded day of music, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Ben Keith and Tim Drummond performed a loose set.
3) You've seen the clip in 'The Last Waltz' movie directed by Martin Scorcese - for "Tears of Rage," the final song of the night before some spontaneous jamming (see below), most of the evening's special guests (if not all of them) return to the stage to sing along.
4) For the 1986 Crack-Down Benefit Concert at Madison Square Garden, Bill Graham assembled another jaw-dropping cast. At the end of the Allman Brothers Band's set (who were playing together for the first time since 1982), they were joined by Carlos Santana, Mick Taylor, Paul Butterfield, Felix Cavaliere, Stephen Stills, Buddy Miles and Babatunde Olatunji.
5) There were amazing bills each night during the week leading up to the closing of the Fillmore West, including the evening of June 30th. This early morning jam session, which made it on to the album release, features members of both Elvin Bishop's and Boz Scagg's groups, Michael Shrieve (from Santana) on drums, Taj Mahal, and a guest appearance by either Jo Baker or Lydia Pense of Cold Blood.
6) This was the 7th incarnation of Ringo's All-Starr Bands, which included Greg Lake, Roger Hodgson, Ian Hunter, Howard Jones, Mark Rivera and Sheila E.
