Concert Summary

To listen to an interview with Peter Tosh during the late 1970s, one would think it was him--not Bob Marley--who took reggae music from Jamaica and brought it to the world in a form that everyone could embrace. In truth, it was neither of these two legendary Rastafarian musicians, but instead record producer and label owner Chris Blackwell. Blackwell had discovered and signed The Wailers, with their original line up of Tosh,…entire summary

Calling Tosh the Lennon to Marley's McCartney is disingenuous. He may qualify as a Harrison at most, and more likely a Ringo...some talent and more about personality than artistry and talent.

Tosh was a malcontent and infamous for his burly and rude nature. He was also a racist--he wore his hatred against whites on his sleeve, while Marley tried to reach out and show kindness and unity. I love Peter Tosh's music and am sorry for his premature death--but I don't think you would have had the same opinion if you would have tried to spend time with him.

Anybody who doesn't believe in the legalization of marijuana is an ass hole! Just let us do what we want and mind your own business. It's just that simple. In case you haven't noticed, it doesn't affect you at all. Just shut up about it already and legalize marijuana!

He seems to be more radical than Bob Marley. And the music is more modern too. But I dont approve his demand to free access to drugs.

Oh yes, The Wailer's first show in NY was opening for one Bruce Springsteen at Max's Kansas City on Park Avenue South. A friend of mine was there so I'm pretty certain there were more non-West Indians at that particular show.
Timothy White and I both worked at the same publishing company and I was to bring my copy of Catch a Fire down for him to autograph he day he died in the elevator at work. Tim and I were both Irish Catholic boys from northern New Jersey. Some time after Tim died Ziggy stopped and played a short acoustic set in the Billboard offices around the time Dragonfly was released.

Well let's see....Before moving to Jamaica in 1981 I overheard Al Anderson in Bleecker Bob's saying that it was just a matter of time before Marley passed on. A couple of months later, I had to pass through Marley's funeral in order to catch a truck to take us up to a funeral in the Blue Mountains in the Parish of St. Thomas. Up until we left I was recording the lead-up from the JBC on my boombox.
Tosh fronted a lot before cameras and microphones, but he loved Bob and vice versa and would get misty when Bob was brought up to him..
Tosh did have several character flaws. They led to the police breaking his arm once, and later led to his death. His not keeping his word to the guy who took his gun possession rap proved fatal.
My wife and I walked passed his tour bus at the Wollman Rink in Central Park and saw all these stoned blondes tumbling out including Anita Van Pallenberg with Tosh and S&R etc. Great show btw, Tamlins sang back up vocals.
Later that year when my Jamaican wife was home and had gone down to the fisherman's beach to buy fish for sunday dinner... behold, there was Tosh doing the same. He eyed her up and tried chatting her up but she looked him up and down, and told him about himself reminding him of his preference for blondes on tour. LOL, Tosh just stood there gobsmacked.

Uziah Sticky Thompson had a music career going back to the 50's as "Count Sticky" a mento, calypso, ska chap then and used to play on the steamships that carried West Indians to England in the post-war era. Sticky drove a white '68 or '69 Camaro and used to drink rum at my bar on Waltham Park Road. We had musician friends in common like Earl "Chinna" Smith, Kiddus I, Santa Davis (who played often with Tosh and was the one who drove him to the hospital when he was shot), Augustus Pablo and others.
