Concert Summary

Following the disbanding of the final Butterfield Blues Band lineup, Paul Butterfield relocated to the artist colony that had developed in the Catskill Mountains around Bearsville and Woodstock, NY. He began hanging out with members of the Band, Van Morrison, Jesse Winchester, and an ever-growing roster of high profile musicians who had also relocated there in recent years. Here Butterfield assembled a new band, which featured some of the cream of that crop of veteran musicians. The new group, christened Better Days, had an extraordinary frontline consisting of Butterfield on harp and…entire summary

When I lived in Austin/TX.between 1975 and 1980 I've got to see Paul live on stage, shortly before he died. We talked after the concert and I as a German Student in Austin even being quite a good harpplayer myself at home was totally overwhelmed. This concert here is really awesome and Amos reminds me of an excellent Viennese harp-player I saw some years ago in Hamburg. MARVELLOUS!!!!

Amos Garrett is one of the most amazing, and most undercelebrated talents to have picked up a guitar in the past 50 years. No one is more lyrical or emotional. His excursion on "Please Send Me Someone To Love" is perfectly exquisite.

Paul Butterfield was a major talent. Can you imagine someone who could both front and sing and play harp and yet also back and support and *manage* a band with tons of energy and talent? He didn't just bring blues to middle class kids; he played so very, very well. I don't understand why talent like this goes underground, but I'm glad I was down here for it when it arrived.

Having heard the all the other concerts by Butter I was interested to hear if this had the same intensity as the earlier stuff. Wow these guys are really giving it large.

The next night , February 24 , 1973 , was one of my favorite shows at Winterland in the nearly ten years I hung out there . It was this lineup , with most of the original Butterfield Blues Band reuniting for another set and a bay area jam session that lasted till about 4 in the morning . This show was so good , Bill brought this lineup back together , later in the year to record live , but the energy was'nt there as was the first shows . So a live album never happened . The show ended on a somewhat sour note , though . Boz Scaggs was about to go into Loan Me A Dime when some soul singer jumped on stage , grabbed a mike , and started his version of this great song . Boz and the rest of the musicians that were still up there just let him go , and the show ended . It was still one of those great San Francisco nights that made Bill Graham Presents the best . My friends VW bus got broke into that night and his stereo and speakers got ripped off , but we did'nt care after seeing the show we just saw . The Fillmore is great , but I sure miss Winterland . Thanx , David .

Better Days were badass. I don't think Butterfield gets the props that he should from the harmonica enthusiasts. Also check out the RCO Allstars recordings.
