Concert Summary

Often credited for revitalizing the clean sparkling sound of traditional jazz guitar, Pat Metheny has evolved into a most prolific musician who continues to explore technology within the context of progressive and contemporary jazz. Metheny's recording career began in the mid-1970s while teaching at Boston's Berklee College of Music, when he recorded trio sessions (released on the 1976 LP, Bright Size Life) for pianist Paul Bley's Improvising Artists label, along with fretless electric bassist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Bob Moses. Metheny gained more exposure as the second guitarist…entire summary

The performance of Jaco is stunning! Mark and Danny are (still) an incredible rhythm section. I spent a lot of time with PMG starting about 6 months after this show was record...brings back a lot of happy happy memories.

My wife and I saw Pat Metheny and his band several times during the early 80's. They were always put on an amazing show. This really takes me back-thanks for posting it!

Mr. Skin, where in the world did you get the idea that One Quiet Night was done on a Taylor guitar?????? That entire recording was done with one guitar: The baritone guitar built for Pat Metheny by Toronto luthier Linda Manzer.

I take it you downloaded it for free rather than buying it, because the guitar and the tuning (half-Nashville) are extensively described in the liner notes.

You're confused about his earliest recordings with Jaco. Bright Size Life was on ECM, and was PM's first recording as a leader. Prior to that, PM was on a quartet record date led by Paul Bley that included Jaco and Paul Ditmus drums. It's been reissued several times, with different titles.

I've been a big Pat Metheny for a long time. I never get tired of listening to his and Lyle Mays's music! If you want to hear a simple jazz guitar album, with no special effects, check out "One Quiet Night", just Metheny on a Taylor guitar, sweet!

Pat was very much in his prime here. If you like Pat and don't have BSL and the underrated New Chautaqua, check them out. Maybe his two best along with Offramp.

He's still focused entirely on melody at this point, and as that's his forte this is a typically fine outing for the period. Jaco remains one of his funkiest tunes, and Egan and Gottlieb shine on that and the rest of this set. If you like this show, look around for the radio show from Portland Maine, 8.3.77, a well-traded tape among fans and featuring even better sound than this.

This is also just about as pure Pat's tone ever got. Splendid.

I kick myself for having passed up on seeing the Metheny and Jeff Lorber groups together for a show in Portland around this time - what a night it must have been. Kevin17m
