Sex, drugs and rock n' roll took more than a few lives at the start of the 1970's. Neil Young survived but close friends did not. He would feel personally responsible for one - the death of Danny Whitten. Fired during rehearsals for the Time Fades Away tour, the guitarist would die the same night from a cocktail of drugs. The three-month, 65-date tour became an exorcism for Young, sorting out the demons of rage, guilt, betrayal. Recordings of the tour would become the rarest and most critically acclaimed capsule of bitter pills. Joe Sia captured stark images of the angst in this shot and others he took during the first weeks of the tour.
Photographer, Joe Sia, captured moments by focusing on the faces of the performers, the crowd, and by giving the background, whether simple or wild, the importance it deserved in defining the artist and event. Sia's entire archive consists more than a quarter of a million photographs that document almost 35 years of music genre and giants.
