Concert Summary

Back when Southern Rock ruled the arenas and airwaves, one of the top marquee names aside Georgia's Allman Brothers and Florida's Lynyrd Skynyrd was the Gator State's own the Outlaws, from Tampa. Following their mega-success in the '70s but before their brand of southern-inspired boogie went into retrograde, MTV caught the band in their early '80s prime, during this 1982 show at live concert Mecca, the Tower Theater in Philadelphia (scene of countless historic live shows, from David Bowie to The Boss).

After some false starts in the late '60s and early '70s, the Outlaws as we've come…entire summary

In response to "Anonymous'" posting re: the original band members, technically, he's correct. The original band that became "famous" in the early '70's was: Hughie Thomasson, guitar. Billy Jones, guitar. Henry Paul, guitar. Frank O'Keefe, bass. Monte Yoho, drums. (aka "The Florida Guitar Army) Freddie Salem replaced Henry Paul before the recording of the famous live album, "Bring It Back Alive" (1977) and Harvey Dalton Arnold replaced Frank O'Keefe on bass. David Dix occupied the second drum throne on that recording and actually was part of the "mix" as far back as 1967. I saw them many times in the early to mid '70's with only Monte on drums and several times with both Monte and David. I know this because I spent quite a bit of time on the road with MTB. I knew the Outlaw band and crew pretty well at the time. I stood in the wings back stage and saw the many of their shows. (Billy and I got fairly looped on the Queen Mary the night after the Long Beach Arena show with Boston....where The Outlaws blew Boston off the stage!!) R.I.P. to Billy...I knew him best. He was a wonderful human being and a smokin' guitar player.
All told, there was a very long list of players who were part of the Outlaws at one time or another. The five piece listed above was the band that got everyone's attention. Main point, David Dix was always part of the Outlaws and in fact was in and out of the band from very early on.
This Tower Theater show is fine (with Hughie, Freddie and David, all original or mostly original members) But listen to "Bring It Back Alive" for some real, get-down Outlaws/Florida Guitar Army music! IMO, the band at their peak!
    Thanks for reading... Cheers!!

It is beyond me how The Outlaws are not in the "Rock n Roll Hall of Fame"? Shame on the committee!!!! God Bless Hughie, Frank, Billy.

This is basically a stripped-down version of the band with only Hughie as the remaining original member. Great Band!!!

This opening track is truly the heaviest track ive heard them perform. A great band back in the day like Molly Hatchet who really didnt stand the test of time, same applies to Blackfoot.God Bless for Skynyrd for still flying the Rebel Flag musically

Thomasson & Salem were part of my defense of the onslaught of late '70's/early '80's of disco/punk/grundge or whatever else they were trying to sell as "music" back then. This one brings back pleasant memories!

as band technically proficient as they were, clive davis should have groomed them for something other than a bubba band
