Once you listen to Odetta you never forget her. A classically trained musician, she used her powerfully rich voice to champion civil rights issues for over 50 years.
Along with a stellar list of other performers, Odetta appeared at the Seva Foundation's 1998 "Sing out for Seva" benefit in Berkeley, California.
Odetta continued to perform through the summer of 2008. She died in New York City on December 2, 2008. We are pleased to be able to present her performance from that evening here at the Concert Vault. Read more…entire summary

Just getting to this for a listen. The first time I heard her was at St. John The Divine Cathedral, NYC between sets by the Paul Winter Consort. She was not on the bill; just in attendance that evening. Paul Winter introduced her and she sang an old spiritual rhyming song (originally taught to teach children to remember the names of the months in a year). Singing unaccompanied and not using the sound system at all Odetta could be heard clear as a bell everywhere within that cavernous place. Although I did not know who she was at the time I too will never forget the power of her voice. Years later I was able to meet her in person. She could not have been more gracious. After she performed at the (re)opening of the Carolina Theater in Durham, NC she consented to a meet and greet for the crew and select patrons where too everyone's amazement she sang show tunes with local pianist Paul Holmes.

Odetta just recently passed away this week. So, it is great that you made this audio concert segment available. I was into folk music as a teen and had her records (remember those things?). Then, I saw Odetta live about over 45 years ago in Chicago and never forgot the power of her voice.
